Students solve problems that center on: Solving Related Rates Problems. Encourage a short plan (what is known, what is unknown, which tool fits) before diving into algebra.

Why it matters
- Derivative fluency here is reused in related rates, optimization, and motion problems later.
- Contextual derivatives (related rates, linearization, L’Hospital) are FRQ favorites.
- Students must translate a story into rates and justify which quantity is changing.
- Local linear approximation connects calculus to estimation in the real world.
- Indeterminate limits requiring L’Hospital show up on both exams.
How you can support
- Ask them to state what the derivative means in the problem’s units before simplifying.
- Ask: “What is given as a rate, and what are we asked to find?”
- Have them draw a quick sketch and label variables before differentiating.
- Celebrate a correct related-rates equation even before plugging numbers.
- For linearization, ask whether the estimate is an over- or under-estimate and why.
- Remind them to check L’Hospital conditions (0/0 or ∞/∞) before applying.
What not to do
- Do not skip naming which differentiation rule justifies each step.
- Do not differentiate both sides without naming the independent variable (usually time).
- Do not plug in numbers before differentiating in related rates.
- Do not use L’Hospital on limits that are not indeterminate.
- Do not forget units on rate answers.
