What this topic is
Students apply tools and theorems to new situations: Using Linear Partial Fractions. Watch for correct setup first; arithmetic can be cleaned up after the plan is right.
This topic is course scope only (not directly assessed on the AP Exam).
Why it matters
- Integral setup and justification are high-value points on free-response questions.
- Integration and accumulation are half of AB and a large share of BC.
- Students must link antiderivatives, definite integrals, and area/accumulation stories.
- FTC Part 1 and Part 2 are exam staples—notation and limits of integration matter.
- Numeric approximation (Riemann, trapezoid) appears when antiderivatives are hard.
How you can support
- Ask what quantity is being accumulated and what the units of the integrand are.
- Ask: “Is this asking for an antiderivative, a net change, or an area?”
- Have them write units for accumulated quantities (miles, liters, …).
- Celebrate correct limits of integration and integrand setup before evaluating.
- For Riemann sums, ask left/right/midpoint and whether over- or under-estimate.
- Connect one definite integral back to “total change from a to b.”
What not to do
- Do not evaluate a definite integral without confirming limits and integrand match the story.
- Do not drop the +C on indefinite integrals when it is required.
- Do not reverse limits of integration without changing the sign.
- Do not treat area below the axis as positive without reading the question.
- Do not confuse average value of a function with average rate of change.
