What this topic is
Students learn procedures and decision rules for: Finding the Area Between Curves Expressed as Functions of y. Success looks like choosing a valid method, showing the key steps, and checking that the result fits the situation.

Why it matters
- Applications of integration (area, volume, accumulation) are classic FRQ material.
- Students must choose washers, shells, or known cross-sections appropriately.
- Net vs total distance and particle motion connect derivatives and integrals.
- Clear diagrams and labeled slices earn method points even when arithmetic slips.
How you can support
- Ask: “What is the region, and are we revolving or using cross-sections?”
- Have them sketch and mark the slice (dx or dy) before writing an integral.
- Praise a correct volume setup (πR², shell, etc.) before computing.
- For particle motion, ask when velocity is positive/negative and what that means.
- Keep one justification sentence: what the integral represents in the story.
What not to do
- Do not mix dx and dy inconsistently with the bounds.
- Do not forget π in disk/washer methods.
- Do not confuse displacement with total distance traveled.
- Do not skip absolute value when a quantity must be positive (distance, area).
