Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- Define sinusoidal and recognize sine/cosine as examples.
- Find period, frequency, amplitude, and midline from a graph or description.
- State parent values: period $2\pi$, amplitude $1$, midline $y=0$.
- Classify sine as odd and cosine as even with a reason.
On the AP Exam
- MCQ: read amplitude/period/midline; odd vs even; frequency reciprocal.
- FRQ: describe characteristics from a graph or context (skills 2.A, 3.A).
- Full $a,b,c,d$ transform packages are centered in 3.6; here focus on the characteristic language.
Tactics
1. Mark max and min first. 2. Midline $=(\max+\min)/2$; amplitude $=(\max-\min)/2$. 3. Period $=$ length of one full cycle; frequency $=1/$period. 4. For odd/even: test $f(-x)$ or cite symmetry. 5. Mention concavity change if asked about shape along the wave.
Common Traps
- Using max as amplitude when midline shifted (even if this topic emphasizes parents, stay precise).
- Reporting frequency equal to period.
- Calling sine even because the wave "looks symmetric."
- Measuring half a period as the period.
