Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- Write and parse $a\sin(b(\theta+c))+d$.
- State amplitude, period, midline/vertical shift, and phase shift from parameters.
- Graph each single transform and a combined example.
- Convert between $\sin(b\theta+k)$ and factored $b(\theta+c)$ form.
On the AP Exam
- MCQ: match equation to traits; choose correct period/phase.
- FRQ: identify parameters; sketch; write an equation from a graph (skills 1.C, 2.B).
Tactics
1. Rewrite into $a\sin\big(b(\theta+c)\big)+d$ (or cos) when needed. 2. Read $|a|$, $2\pi/|b|$, $d$, then phase $-c$. 3. If $a<0$, note reflection across the midline as well as amplitude $|a|$. 4. Sketch midline first, then amplitude band, then period spacing, then phase. 5. For cosine vs sine: same transform rules; starting landmark differs.
Common Traps
- Phase shift sign flip.
- Period formula upside down.
- Leaving $c$ inside $b\theta+c$ without factoring $b$.
- Reporting vertical shift as amplitude.
