Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- Extract period, amplitude, and midline from data/context.
- Write a sinusoidal model (sine or cosine).
- Estimate phase from a known point.
- Predict with domain awareness and rationale.
On the AP Exam
- MCQ: choose period/amp from a table; pick a reasonable prediction; identify model parameters.
- FRQ: construct a model; predict; justify with data (skills 1.C, 3.C).
Tactics
1. Mark consecutive max or min; measure horizontal distance for period. 2. Midline $=(\max+\min)/2$; amplitude $=(\max-\min)/2$. 3. Choose sine or cosine based on starting landmark. 4. Plug a known point to find phase. 5. State contextual domain before predicting.
Common Traps
- Period from peak to trough only.
- Prediction outside the modeled time window.
- No rationale for sinusoidal choice.
- Mixing units (hours vs radians) without consistency.
Quick Checklist
- [ ] Period from full repeat interval
- [ ] Amp/midline from max/min
- [ ] Phase from a known pair
- [ ] Equation written clearly
- [ ] Prediction + domain + rationale
