Study Guide
Learning Objectives
- Interpret equations in two variables as implicit function descriptions (4.5.A.1).
- Graph by finding solution pairs (4.5.A.2).
- Solve for one variable to obtain explicit branches (4.5.A.3).
- Describe how quantities vary together on nearby points (4.5.B.1, 4.5.B.2).
Course scope only (Unit 4 additional topic; not on the AP Exam).
Suggested Practice Sequence
1. Test several (x, y) pairs in the equation. 2. Plot solution points or use technology. 3. Solve for y (or x) when possible on an interval. 4. Estimate Delta y / Delta x between nearby points. 5. Identify horizontal or vertical intervals from zero rates.
Classroom / Check-In Moves
- "Does this point satisfy the equation?"
- "Which branch does this explicit solve show?"
- "Same direction or opposite?"
Misconception Watch-List
- Thinking y = f(x) is the only valid form.
- Missing a second branch (e.g., circle top/bottom).
- Using one point to claim global co-variation.
- Calling any flat graph piece "horizontal" without context.
Vocabulary to Own
- implicit equation; explicit form
- solution pair; branch
- co-vary; change ratio
- horizontal interval; vertical interval
