Common Mistakes
Algebra I · Honors Math · Quadratic equations
Real mistakes students make on solve by taking square roots—and how to catch and fix them.
Focus for this topic: Solve quadratic equations of the form x² = k by taking square roots.
Frequent mistakes
### 1. Quadratic formula sign errors
What it looks/sounds like: Wrong sign on −b or under the radical; arithmetic flips mid-formula.
Why it happens: The formula is long, so students copy fragments incorrectly.
How to fix: Write a, b, c with signs first; substitute with parentheses: (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / (2a).
### 2. Forgetting ± when taking square roots
What it looks/sounds like: Reporting only the positive root after √ both sides.
Why it happens: Calculator √ returns one value; students forget the second solution.
How to fix: When x² = k, write x = ±√k (and check domain/context).
### 3. Vertex formula mistakes
What it looks/sounds like: Using h = b/(2a) or mixing up k after finding h.
Why it happens: The negative in h = −b/(2a) is easy to drop.
How to fix: Compute h carefully, then find k by evaluating f(h) (or completing the square).
### 4. Keeping context-impossible roots
What it looks/sounds like: Reporting a negative time or length without comment.
Why it happens: Algebra finishes; interpretation is skipped.
How to fix: Check each root in the story; reject and explain nonviable values.
### 5. Wrong form for the feature asked
What it looks/sounds like: Expanding when zeros were needed, or factoring when vertex was needed.
Why it happens: Students use the last form they practiced.
How to fix: Match ask → form: zeros → factored; max/min → vertex; end behavior cues → standard.
How to avoid them
1. Restate what 8.2 asks in one sentence before computing. 2. Name the method or representation you will use. 3. Define variables with units before writing symbols. 4. Check one easy special case, diagram estimate, or unit/domain check after a long solution. 5. Ask: does this answer match the required form and the prompt?
