What this standard means
Your teen is working on define functions. In plain terms: Determine whether a relation is a function and describe its inputs and outputs. This sits in the Functions part of Algebra I · Honors.
How students learn it (methods)
- Decide whether each input has exactly one output (function test).
- Read key features from graphs: intercepts, max/min, increasing/decreasing intervals.
- Move among verbal rules, tables, equations, and graphs.
At home, ask your teen to explain one method they used on homework in their own words.
Why it matters at home
- Reading a fare table or tax bracket chart
- Tracking how a phone battery drains over time
- Comparing pay with a base rate plus overtime
- Interpreting weather temperature graphs
Connected standards
- Builds on:
- `3.7` - Residuals to assess linear fit - earlier skill this topic builds on.
- Connects within grade:
- `4.3` - Domain, range, and features of graphs - related work in the same unit (Functions).
- Leads to:
- `4.2` - Verbal rules - natural next step after this topic.
Try these together (this standard)
1. Does the relation {(1,2),(1,3),(2,4)} represent a function? Why? 2. For f(x) = 3x - 5, find f(4) and solve f(x) = 7. 3. A graph of distance vs time rises steadily then stays flat. Describe the rate of change in each part.
Problems that show the connections
1. (Uses 3.7) Quick review of Residuals to assess linear fit: write one sentence explaining the main idea, then show how today's topic (Define functions) uses it. 2. (Uses 4.3) Compare Define functions with Domain, range, and features of graphs: how are they alike and how are they different?
How you can help
- Ask "What do you already know?" before "What is the answer?"
- Have them define any variable or unknown in a full sentence.
- Celebrate a clear explanation even if a calculation needs fixing.
- Watch for answers that are mathematically possible but impossible in context.
- Keep sessions short (10-15 minutes) and end on a success.
- If stuck, try a simpler number version of the same problem.
Answer key
1. No - input 1 maps to both 2 and 3. 2. f(4) = 7. 3x - 5 = 7 → x = 4. 3. Rising: positive constant rate (moving). Flat: rate of change 0 (stopped). 4. Answers vary; should correctly recall Residuals to assess linear fit and link it to Define functions. 5. Answers vary; look for a clear similarity and a clear distinction between 4.1 and 4.3.
