Exam Strategy
Algebra II · Honors Math · Exponential and logarithmic functions
How to prepare for quizzes, unit tests, and practice-test tiers on change of base and continuous models in Algebra II · Honors. Focus: Use change-of-base; deepen continuous-growth models with e and ln.
What "ready" looks like
You are ready for a mid-topic check when you can:
- Decide whether a relation is a function
- Evaluate and solve with function notation
- Read intercepts, max/min, and increase/decrease from a graph
- Translate among verbal, table, equation, and graph forms
Before the quiz or test
1. Warm up with 2-3 short practice items from Practice sets 1-5. 2. Skim your notes/formulas for this topic only (one page max). 3. Do one Review tier under timed-ish conditions. 4. List what the question will ask you to show (setup, work, units, conclusion).
Multiple-choice tips
- Eliminate choices that violate the problem conditions before computing.
- Estimate first; discard answers that are the wrong order of magnitude.
- Watch for distractors that reverse a key operation or inequality.
- If two choices look close, re-read what the stem actually asks for.
Free-response / written tips
- Write a brief plan, then show organized steps.
- Label unknowns and units; box the final answer.
- State a one-sentence interpretation when the problem is contextual.
- If stuck, try a simpler number version, then return to the given values.
Common traps
- Confusing f(x) evaluation with solving f(x) = k
- Claiming a relation is a function when an input has two outputs
- Mixing up domain and range
- Misreading open/closed endpoints on a graph
Quick checklist
- [ ] Can state what change of base and continuous models requires
- [ ] Can finish one clean example with labeled work
- [ ] Can name and avoid one trap for this topic
- [ ] Completed at least one Review or practice-test tier recently
