Real mistakes students make on describe cross sections—and how to catch and fix them.

### 1. Radius vs diameter mix-up
What it looks/sounds like: Using diameter in a formula that needs radius (or the reverse).
Why it happens: Diagrams show a full width while formulas ask for half.
How to fix: Label r and d on the sketch; substitute the one the formula names.
### 2. Arc measure vs arc length
What it looks/sounds like: Reporting degrees when a length is asked (or vice versa).
Why it happens: Both use the word “arc,” so units get ignored.
How to fix: Check the unit: degrees/radians for measure; length units for arc length.
### 3. Wrong solid formula
What it looks/sounds like: Using prism volume for a pyramid/cone (missing the 1/3) or mixing surface pieces.
Why it happens: Formula sheets blur under speed.
How to fix: Name the solid first, write the matching formula, then plug in.
### 4. Unit mismatches
What it looks/sounds like: cm mixed with cm² or cm³ in the same answer.
Why it happens: Area/volume language is skipped after computation.
How to fix: State the unit with the number and match dimension to the ask.
### 5. Missing the base of the solid
What it looks/sounds like: Choosing the wrong face as the base before computing volume/surface area.
Why it happens: Orientation of the drawing misleads.
How to fix: Identify the base (and height perpendicular to it) before the formula.
How to avoid them
1. Restate what 5.1 asks in one sentence before computing. 2. Name the method or representation you will use. 3. Define variables with units before writing symbols. 4. Check one easy special case, diagram estimate, or unit/domain check after a long solution. 5. Ask: does this answer match the required form and the prompt?
