Real mistakes students make on tangents to circles—and how to catch and fix them.

### 1. Using SSA as a congruence shortcut
What it looks/sounds like: Claiming triangles congruent from two sides and a non-included angle alone.
Why it happens: SAS/ASA/SSS patterns blur together under time pressure.
How to fix: Name the criterion from marked parts; if it is SSA, stop and use a different approach.
### 2. Opposite/adjacent mix-up in trig
What it looks/sounds like: Sine and cosine ratios swapped relative to the reference angle.
Why it happens: Students memorize SOH-CAH-TOA without labeling the triangle.
How to fix: Mark opposite/adjacent/hypotenuse for the given angle before writing a ratio.
### 3. Assuming the figure is drawn to scale
What it looks/sounds like: Reading lengths/angles from a sketch instead of given measures.
Why it happens: Diagrams look precise even when they are not.
How to fix: Use only labeled measures; compute the rest.
### 4. Proof without reasons
What it looks/sounds like: Writing statements with no congruence/similarity reason lines.
Why it happens: Students treat proofs like informal notes.
How to fix: Each key step needs a reason (given, vertical angles, SAS, etc.).
### 5. Congruence vs similarity confusion
What it looks/sounds like: Treating similar triangles as congruent (or ignoring scale factor).
Why it happens: Equal angles suggest “same size” to many students.
How to fix: Ask: same size or same shape? Apply the scale factor to lengths.
How to avoid them
1. Restate what 7.8 asks in one sentence before computing. 2. Name the method or representation you will use. 3. Define variables with units before writing symbols. 4. Check one easy special case, diagram estimate, or unit/domain check after a long solution. 5. Ask: does this answer match the required form and the prompt?
