Exam Strategy
Pre-calculus · Honors Math · Systems, matrices, and analytic geometry
How to prepare for quizzes, unit tests, and practice-test tiers on systems of equations and inequalities in Pre-calculus · Honors. Focus: Solve linear and nonlinear systems; introduce matrices.
What "ready" looks like
You are ready for a mid-topic check when you can:
- Translate at least / at most language into correct inequality symbols
- Graph on a number line or plane and shade the correct side
- Test a point to verify the shaded region
- Interpret the solution set in a word problem
Before the quiz or test
1. Warm up with 2-3 short practice items from Practice sets 1-5. 2. Skim your notes/formulas for this topic only (one page max). 3. Do one Review tier under timed-ish conditions. 4. List what the question will ask you to show (setup, work, units, conclusion).
Multiple-choice tips
- Check boundary inclusion from the wording before looking at graphs.
- Test (0,0) or another easy point against each half-plane choice.
- Eliminate graphs with the wrong slope or intercept first.
- For compounds, confirm both parts are satisfied.
Free-response / written tips
- Write the inequality, solve, then graph with a clear boundary mark.
- State the solution in inequality and interval notation when asked.
- For systems of inequalities, show the overlapping region.
- Explain what the shaded set means in the story.
Common traps
- Forgetting to flip the inequality when multiplying/dividing by a negative
- Open vs closed circle (or dashed vs solid) mistakes
- Shading the wrong half-plane
- Treating a compound inequality as two unrelated statements
Quick checklist
- [ ] Can state what systems of equations and inequalities requires
- [ ] Can finish one clean example with labeled work
- [ ] Can name and avoid one trap for this topic
- [ ] Completed at least one Review or practice-test tier recently
