### 4. Distribution or sign error
What it looks/sounds like: Missing a distributed term or dropping a negative when simplifying.
Why it happens: Multi-step cleanup invites skipping a term.
How to fix: Rewrite the expanded line and tick each distributed piece.
### 5. Literal equation solved for the wrong variable
What it looks/sounds like: Rearranging a formula but ending with a different letter than requested.
Why it happens: Students clear the first term they see instead of isolating the target.
How to fix: Circle the target variable and undo operations around it only.
How to avoid them
1. Restate what 3.4 asks in one sentence before computing. 2. Name the method or representation you will use. 3. Define variables with units before writing symbols. 4. Check one easy special case, diagram estimate, or unit/domain check after a long solution. 5. Ask: does this answer match the required form and the prompt?
