What this standard means
Your child learns to sort objects into categories, count how many are in each category, and sort the categories by count (which group has more/fewer).
(Limit category counts to sensible kindergarten sizes — often ≤ 10.)
Why it matters at home
- Laundry: sort socks by color, count each pile
- Lego: sort by color or size, count
- Snack mix: sort shapes, count each
- Buttons or coins (with supervision): sort and count
- Clean-up: toys into bins, then count

1. Sort a mixed pile of red and blue blocks. Count each color. 2. Which category has more? Sort the categories by count (more → fewer). 3. Make a third category (e.g., yellow) if you have some; count again.

How you can help
- Agree on the sorting rule before starting
- Keep total objects manageable
- Have them touch-count each category
- Ask “Which has more?” after counting
- Recording tallies or numerals is a bonus, not required
- Connect cleanup time to math
