What this standard means
Your child learns to solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10, and to add and subtract within 10, using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
Why it matters at home
- “We had 6 apples; we ate 2. How many left?” at snack time
- Sharing toys: “3 in the box, 4 more. How many now?”
- Story walks: invent short put-together / take-from tales
- Drawing the story, then counting
- Using cereal pieces as counters for homework-style stories

- Read the story twice; have them retell before solving
- Always have counters or drawings available
