What this standard means

Your child works toward fluently adding and subtracting within 5 — quick, accurate answers for facts like 2 + 3 and 5 − 1, ideally without always counting from 1.

Why it matters at home

• Tiny finger flashes: show 2, add 2 — total?
• Card games with totals ≤ 5
• Dice with 1–3 only for quick sums
• Snack: “3 berries, eat 1 — left?”
• Bedtime: two quick facts, celebrate speed + accuracy

How you can help

• Fluency means accurate + reasonably quick — not frantic
• If they count every time, return to objects briefly, then retry
• Practice a few facts a day, mixed (+ and −)
• Celebrate knowing without shame about “still counting”
• Stay strictly within 5 for this fluency goal
• Games beat timed pressure for many kids
